Our courses bring together Stanford instructors from a range of backgrounds and academic disciplines, including education, sociology, physics, Latin American studies, international policy, neurobiology, community health, comparative literature, and more.
SJPEP courses operate in one of three styles: seminars, book clubs, and creativity-centered.
The seminar courses, with titles like “Humans and Earth” and “Myths and Misconceptions”, are discussion-based and cover topics as diverse as gentrification, scientific error, and gender as a construct.
Our book clubs employ novels, such as All About Love by bell hooks, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exuperéy, and El llano en llamas by Juan Rulfo, as jumping off points to explore the role of love in modern society, family as a social construct, and borders as sociocultural phenomena.
Finally, creativity-based courses use artistic pursuits to explore themes as diverse as identity construction, the relationship between neuroscience and art, and urban planning. In creativity-based courses, students have the opportunity to create artworks which may be shared with their families and the broader community.
